Pádraig Ó Méalóid interviews Bryan Talbot
Thought my readers might be interested to know that the first part of Pádraig Ó Méalóid’s two part interview with Bryan Talbot has been posted at the Forgotten Pelmet blog. Bryan’s one of the greats of the comics medium, one of the first, back in the seventies, to think of using comics to tell long-form, finite stories, the creator of Luther Arkwright, The Tale of One Bad Rat, and the imminently forthcoming Grandville, and a big influence on my work. I met him this summer at 2D in Derry, and it was only when I showed him the first issue of The Cattle Raid of Cooley that I realised the sequence of the Morrígan taking off in the form of a crow on page 13 was unconsciously nicked from a (rather better) sequence in Luther Arkwright. I present them below for comparison.

Edited to add: here’s a link to Bryan’s official website.
Edited again: here’s the second part of the interview.

Ach, it’s all archetypes, and we all dip in.
Maybe so, but credit where’s it’s due.
Oh absolutely. Lovely sequences both.
Thanks for the mention! It was a genuine pleasure to do the interview with Bryan, who, in fariness, did most of the writing…
Not at all Pádraig. Keep up the great work!
Hey Paddy,
Really enjoyed the first issue. I only have a vague knowledge of Irish mythology and found reading cattle raid more accessible than anything I’ve read previously. Hope to see you again for more.
Cool. Second issue is nearly finished, and a few pages will need tweaked before printing, but expect to see it before the end of the year.
