The Cattle Raid of Cooley skip week

Aaargh. I know exactly what I want to draw on this week’s page, and I’ve made half a dozen attempts at it, but for whatever reason, it’s as if I’m drawing with boxing gloves on, or as if I’m throwing the pen at the paper from some distance away. It’s just all wrong. Midnight is approaching and I have nothing useful, so I shall apologise and give up. It’ll just have to wait til next week.

In it’s place, I’ll leave you with two illustrations of Cú Chulainn from Our Boys, which was an Irish boys’ story paper back when story papers were a thing. The first is from 1915 and is by George Monks:

The second is Walter C. Mills’ depiction of Cú Chulainn’s death from 1921:

Now, why not call over to Irish Comic News and see what the rest of my cartooning compatriots are up to.

Cattle Raid skip week, and 2D

There will be no update of The Cattle Raid of Cooley this week. I have a table at the 2D Comics Festival in Derry at the weekend, and I’m afraid I’m too busy wrangling my recalcitrant printer to get anything drawn. It promises to be a great show – click through for the programme.

Another skip week

Once again, due to circumstances not entirely within my control, there’s no Cattle Raid of Cooley this week. My day job is somewhat up in the air – I’ve been acting up a grade for the last eight years, they finally advertised the post I’m acting up into, and I didn’t get it. I have a couple of months breathing space, but I’m facing demotion unless I can find something better, and I have interviews to prepare for. Wish me luck.

Another outcome of this situation is, with a pay cut hanging over me, I can’t afford to get issue 4 printed just at the moment. I have a workaround, though – improvised Print on Demand using my home inkjet printer. It has the advantage that it can print in colour on A3 paper, so I’m doing special editions of all four issues, halfway between A5 and A4 (trimmed down so the covers can run to bleed) with the interior art printed, as it’s drawn, in red. But it’s slow, so I can only do a handful of copies at a time, which means I can’t offer them for sale online. I should have some copies of issue 4 available at FanSciCon, a free fantasy and science fiction convention being held at University College Dublin on Friday. Here’s the cover of issue 4, all coloured up:

Another skip week

I’m afraid there’ll be no Cattle Raid of Cooley tomorrow. This week has been, and continues to be, hectic. From rescuing a day’s filming for a TV documentary on comics in Belfast after the last-minute withdrawal of most of the guests today, to preparing for a job interview on Thursday, I haven’t had much time to think about what happens next for Cú Chulainn and co, much less draw it.

I used the cover art for the forthcoming fourth issue as a fill-in last week. This week… well, I made several false starts at this story before I found an approach I was comfortable with. Here’s the unfinished pencil art for what would have been the first page of one such attempt, before I reluctantly decided to cut the famous “pillow talk” scene from the Book of Leinster version and open with Ailill and Medb gathering their army, as in the earlier version, and before I stopped using pencils and started drawing straight in ink. I still like Ailill’s expression in the second-last panel, but I hadn’t got Medb right yet.

The Cattle Raid of Cooley skips a week

It’s been a long day. My day job is slightly up in the air, and I ended up staying late this evening, and I’m afraid I’m a little bit wiped just now, so this week’s page is not drawn. But! I can give you a sneak preview of the cover art of issue 4, not yet coloured or dressed, before I go to bed…

More pathetic excuses, and ZGOINK!

TimuloApologies again. There won’t be a new instalment of The Cattle Raid of Cooley again this week. My computer is now more or less better, only now I’m sick. Bleugh.

In other, rather more pleasant news, D’Israeli is publishing a collected edition of his Timulo strip from Deadline! If you’re enjoying his recent stuff on Stickleback and Low Life in 2000AD, this is where it all started. The return of the  Revolutionary Communist Mounted Police (why else would they wear red jackets), the Curse of Kong, the Devastating Battersea Power Station Impersonation, and Doctor Evelyn Tensions! Wantum one.

Enforced downtime

Apologies to anyone wondering where this week’s episode of The Cattle Raid of Cooley is. My hard drive died a couple of days ago, so I haven’t been able to do one. I’ve got a replacement and am now back online, and busy reconstructing my computer. Hopefully normal service will be resumed next week.

Influence Map

No comic this week, but instead here’s my influence map…

Influence Map

These are people whose influence I recognise in my work. I’m sure there are plenty of others I haven’t realised I’m influenced by – leave a comment if you can think of anybody.  Obviously doesn’t include writers, notably John Wagner and Neil Gaiman, who have influenced me, and also doesn’t include people I admire enormously but I can’t see any of in my work – Kevin O’Neill springs to mind.

Inspired by this post on the Forgotten Pelmet blog, linking to a bunch of other artists who’ve done it: at the last count John Allison, Aaron Diaz, Adam Cadwell, Rene Engstrom, Hugh Raine and Paul Shinn.

No Cattle Raid this week

I’m afraid there’s no Cattle Raid of Cooley update this week. My brain has handed in a note and been put on light duties. In the meantime, here’s a picture.
