Embarrassing reason for a skip week

There’s no page today because, well… I forgot. It completely went out of my head. That’s all. I’ll try and get it done for tonight, but no promises.

Another bloody week off.

Probably ought to call this comic “two-weeks-out-of-three-ly” – but I’d miss that deadline too. Ah, what the hell. This is a serialised graphic novel, and when it’s done nobody’ll care about the odd missed week here and there.

In the meantime, you can always go to Will Simpson’s exhibition at W5, opening tomorrow. Will used to draw comics like Transformers and Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper and Hellblazer and Batman. In more recent years he’s been doing concept art and storyboards for film and TV, working on Rob Bowman’s Reign of Fire, John Simpson’s Freeze Frame, Neil Jordan’s Breakfast on Pluto, HBO’s Game of Thrones, David Gordon Green and Danny McBride’s Your Highness, Dickie Attenborough’s Closing The Ring and the Tom Hanks-produced City Of Ember, among many others. The painting below is of Hayley Atwell from the 2007 Irish film How About You.

The Cattle Raid skips a week

I know, I know. I’ve only managed two weeks after my Christmas break, and I’m already missing one. In my defence, this is a very complicated chapter, and I have a deadline on something else, various family commitments, and I’ve been moved to a new department in my day job and am learning the ropes. Plus, as I’ve probably never told this blog, I’ve been taking singing classes since last spring, and I have to learn my part of a song from Les Misérables, a show I’ve never seen, for Thursday. And my masked alter-ego has to stop my arch-enemy from destroying the world. All that. So once again, I crave your indulgence.

But I want to give you something. I’ve recently, with the aid of Irish Comic News, the Dublin cultural blog Come Here to Me!, and the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australia, been able to reconstruct a biographical sketch of Phil Blake, a forgotten Irish cartoonist from the turn of the 20th century, over at the Irish Comics Wiki (check out the page of his cartoons and illustrations as well). Blake was born in Navan, County Meath, in 1869, the son of a farmer and Justice of the Peace, and seems to have started out drawing ads for Dublin businesses and theatre programmes, before taking over as the regular political cartoonist of the Weekly Freeman about 1898. He had a distinctive art nouveau style, and drew for the Freeman until about 1905, even getting a namecheck in James Joyce’s Ulysses. In 1908 he illustrated The Moneylender, a “controversial and scurrilous” novel about Jewish moneylenders in Dublin by Joseph Edelstein, a well-known if controversial member of Dublin’s Jewish community. Some time after that he relocated to Australia, where he illustrated fashion catalogues for a Sydney department store, and designed books of photographs by pioneering Australian photographer Harry Phillips. He died in Sydney in 1918, aged only 49.

The Cattle Raid of Cooley gets its breath back

Last week concluded Chapter 7, and once again I’m going to take a couple of weeks off to recover before I start Chapter 8.

Seven chapters, 181 pages. As things stand there will be two, possibly three chapters and a brief epilogue, and then we’re done. What I’ll do after that I have no idea. I have a few ideas, and hopefully one or another of them will have fermented in the back of my head into something doable by the time I need something new to do. In the meantime, perhaps you’d like to see the drawing that will, once it’s been coloured and dressed up, be the cover of the printed issue 7.

The Cattle Raid of Cooley skips a week

Sadly, real life intrudes yet again. My bathroom is being redone. Two walls have been stripped back to the brick and will soon be replastered and retiled. I was also required to watch Northern Ireland come within a whisker of beating Portugal in Portugal, and it’s hard to draw when you’re holding your breath. With all this going on, I won’t be able to bring you your scheduled weekly update of The Cattle Raid of Cooley this week, I’m afraid. Normal service will hopefully be resumed in due course. In the meantime, Irish Comic News have opened nominations for the 2012 ICN Awards, so if you’d like to nominate me in any of the relevant categories, I’d be absolutely delighted.

I’m tiredzzzzz…..

There’ll be no comic this week, because I’m struggling to keep my eyes open, and my brain is probably about 70% asleep and not stirring. Things going on in what I ruefully refer to as “real life” are taking it out of me to such an extent that I originally put a grocer’s apostrophe into “things” at the beginning of this sentence. I normally write text messages with proper punctuation. And I’m supposed to write a god’s dialogue? Not gonna happen. I shall schedule this post for just after midnight and go to bed.

Skip week, and Colonel Gaddafi’s tent.

Just back from a five-day camping trip in Connemara with my brothers Simon and Alan, and Alan’s wife Louise and their kids Zoe and Sam. Alan and his family are experienced campers and have their own family-sized tent. Simon bought a tent on the internet, which he and I slept in, and which turned out to sleep six in three internal bedrooms, not counting the generous living area in the middle. It was quickly dubbed “Colonel Gaddafi’s tent”.

Fortunately it turned out to be robust enough for the Connemara weather, which was not as pleasant as had been hoped for. The one evening with nice weather also attracted more midges that I believed existed, with Simon, Louise and Zoe getting particularly badly eaten.

Anyway, it was an enjoyable trip despite the conditions, and worth missing 2D for. However, it has thoroughly tired me out, and it’s only just occurred to me, at nearly ten pm, that it’s Tuesday and the next instalment of the comic is due tomorrow morning. I also have to go to work. So, despite my best intentions, another skip week is on the cards. Apologies.

The Cattle Raid of Cooley needs a breather

I forgot to mention, but last week’s page of The Cattle Raid of Cooley was the final page of chapter 6, and you may have noticed that production of pages has slowed to a trickle lately. I’ve been at this since August 2008, over three and a half years, and I think I need a wee bit of a rest. So I’m going to take a few weeks off to do something different, recharge my batteries, and then come back and plunge into chapter seven with renewed vigour. I hope you’ll indulge me.

In the meantime, may I suggest you subscribe to the rss feed, the easiest way to follow webcomics, particularly serial ones, and most particularly serial ones with slightly unreliable update schedules? Here’s a link to an article I wrote for Irish Comic News on how to follow webcomics using rss feeds via Google Reader. If you’re interested in webcomics and don’t know about this, you will thank me.

The Cattle Raid of Cooley is on leave

I haven’t got this week’s Cattle Raid of Cooley drawn in time again. I wasn’t too busy or too tired, there was no creative block. I was off work (the day job) for the Easter holidays, and… I forgot what day it was. Duh. You may throw things at me if you wish.
