Bit of a cock-up on the comic-drawing front

No comic today, sorry. There’s a Black Box Bazaar on Sunday, I need to print some comics to sell and it’s taken most of the evening to get my printer to work. It’s going now, and I’m making the most of it while I can. If you’re in the vicinity of Belfast on the afternoon of Sunday 11 December, and you’re interested in buying some home-made arts and crafts – ideal for Christmas presents – why not come along to the Black Box on Hill Street in the Cathedral Quarter and patronise the various stalls?

Letter like Davy Francis

Davy Francis lettering font

The font I made for Davy Francis, based on his own hand lettering, is available to download for free at DaFont.com – so now anyone can letter their comics like the master.

Skip week, and juvenilia

I’m afraid The Cattle Raid of Cooley is having to miss another week. But to keep you amused in the meantime, I thought I’d share something that’s recently been unearthed. Back at the beginning of the nineties Alan Perry and a few other artists in Belfast produced four issues of an anthology comic called NutScrewsWashers’n’Bolts, and this week Alan has scanned and put the first three online as downloadable pdfs. I had entirely forgotten that I had a couple of strips in issue three.

And here they are. Twenty-one whole years old.

Implausible Tales page 2

Implausible Tales page 3

And finally…

ICN Awards: nominations closed, voting begins!

ICN AWards

Nominations are closed for the inaugural Irish Comic News awards, and voting can now begin in earnest.

I’ve been nominated for Best Self-Published Irish Artist, and The Cattle Raid of Cooley has been nominated for Best Irish Webcomic. Although I contribute to ICN, I didn’t collate the votes and I didn’t nominate myself, so I’m chuffed that someone has. Please vote for whoever and whatever you think deserves it. Voting closes on Friday 28 October.

Bookshop revamped, and new print comics

The Cattle Raid of Cooley issue 3 The Cattle Raid of Cooley issue 4 The Cattle Raid of Cooley issue 5 The Cattle Raid of Cooley issue 3

I’ve revamped the way I sell print comics. I’m now printing them on demand at home, which has some advantages and disadvantages over the way I used to do it. Issues of The Cattle Raid of Cooley in the new style now cost £3.50 plus postage, rather than £2 including postage, but on the plus side they’re printed larger and in colour, meaning you can enjoy them in all their red ink glory. I’ve also taken the opportunity to adjust the design slightly, and draw a new cover for issue 3, the original version of which doesn’t seem to agree with my printer.

If you visit my bookshop page, you’ll see two new issues of The Cattle Raid of Cooley are available exclusively in the new format – as is my full colour kids’ comic Rise at Sundown. Ness is only available in the old format (A5, black and white), and there are still some copies of the first three issues of The Cattle Raid of Cooley in the old format at the old price, as well as in the new format at the new price.

2011 Irish Comic News awards open for nominations!

Irish Comic News Awards

Irish Comic News announces it’s open for nominations for the 2011 ICN Awards! There are categories for Irish comics and creators in the self-published and mainstream fields, as well as comic shops and websites, so if you feel led, please feel free to nominate me and/or my comics in whatever category you think fit. And any other creators and comics, shops, websites and so on you think deserve it, of course. And if you’re stuck for who to nominate, why not browse the Irish Comics Wiki for ideas?

The Cattle Raid of Cooley skip week – for real this time

There really won’t be an instalment of The Cattle Raid of Cooley this week. Too much going on.

Tomorrow evening I’m a guest at Waterstones in the Fairhill Centre in Ballymena for their comic book evening, alongside Andy Luke and Stephen Downey. I’ve been doing a lot of printing in preparation, and I’ve more to do, so I haven’t had any time for drawing. If you’re in the vicinity of Ballymena tomorrow from 7 to 9 in the evening, why not come in and say hello?

The Cattle Raid of Cooley skip week

Aaargh. I know exactly what I want to draw on this week’s page, and I’ve made half a dozen attempts at it, but for whatever reason, it’s as if I’m drawing with boxing gloves on, or as if I’m throwing the pen at the paper from some distance away. It’s just all wrong. Midnight is approaching and I have nothing useful, so I shall apologise and give up. It’ll just have to wait til next week.

In it’s place, I’ll leave you with two illustrations of Cú Chulainn from Our Boys, which was an Irish boys’ story paper back when story papers were a thing. The first is from 1915 and is by George Monks:

The Story of Cuchulainn by George Monks

The second is Walter C. Mills’ depiction of Cú Chulainn’s death from 1921:

Cú Chulainn's death by Walter C. Mills

Now, why not call over to Irish Comic News and see what the rest of my cartooning compatriots are up to.
